REPORTER'S TRANSCRIPT OF PROCEEDINGS
Taken on Wednesday, September 5, 2001
At 7:09 p.m.
At Desert Research Institute
Reno, Nevada

Reported by: Marian S. Brown Pava, CCR #169

APPEARANCES: BEA REILLY, MODERATOR

  KIRK LACHMAN
Department of Energy

MR. LACHMAN: Okay. We're ready.

MS. DEL PAPA: For the record, I am Frankie Sue Del Papa. F-r-a-n-k-i-e; S-u-e; D-e-l P-a-p-a. I am the Attorney General for the State of Nevada. I'm also a native Nevadan.

We have assembled, of course, a legal team within the Attorney General's Office. We are steadfastly committed to join the Governor and the Congressional Delegation and the many Nevadans that will make comments with reference to this issue.

I firmly believe that without the benefit of final siting guidelines for a final Environmental Impact Statement as a foundation for its tentative decision, the Department of Energy is in effect depriving the public, not only in Nevada, but people across the country, of the opportunity to provide meaningful input into a decision which has potentially huge impacts, not only for the State of Nevada, but the nation as a whole.

We will continue to monitor this issue. I will advise my colleagues with the National Association of Attorneys General of what has occurred here.

And I would reiterate that I know that from personal conversations with numerous attorneys general across the country, that they themselves have issues with DOE that are not being resolved, that are related to this issue that we are commenting on today.

We will submit further written testimony. The Solicitor General for the State of Nevada, who is also the former Adjutant General for the State of Nevada, will be issuing a formal written statement and comments as part of this proceeding. Thank you.

MR. LACHMAN: Thank you.
