Director, Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management

Welcome
Welcome to the OCRWM web site. This page identifies OCRWM's mission and purpose.

Welcome to the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management's web site, where our goal is to keep stakeholders informed of activities pertaining to the Yucca Mountain Project in Nye County, Nevada.

Our mission at OCRWM is to manage and dispose of the Nation’s military and civilian high-level radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel in a manner that protects the health and safety of the public without harming the environment.

For more than 25 years, the Department of Energy dedicated its resources to gathering and analyzing information about Yucca Mountain for Congressional consideration as the nation’s first repository for high-level radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel. In 2002, Congress approved that Yucca Mountain be further developed as an underground repository.

Today, while scientific activity continues, the program is moving into its next major phase of designing, engineering and licensing the Yucca Mountain Repository. In July 2006, I announced the new Yucca Mountain schedule along with four strategic objectives for the program:

  • Submit a high-quality and docketable license application to the NRC no later than June 30, 2008
  • Design, staff and train the OCRWM organization such that it has the skills and culture needed to design, license and manage the construction and operation of the Yucca Mountain Project with safety, quality and cost-effectiveness.
  • Address the Federal Government’s mounting liability associated with unmet contractual obligations, outlined in the Nuclear Waste Policy Act, to move spent fuel from nuclear plant sites.
  • Develop and begin implementation of a comprehensive national spent fuel transportation plan that accommodates state, local and tribal concerns to the greatest extent practicable.

Effective progress in the four areas outlined above is critical to resolving the nation’s growing need to safely dispose of high-level radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel, and these areas will be receiving my full attention during my tenure in this office.

Please feel free to explore our website to learn more about Yucca Mountain, nuclear waste disposal, our program and our people. Let us know how we can make it better.

Sincerely,

Ward Sproat
